Getting To Know The Birth Of Grunge Music
The American Northwest and Seattle in particular have the distinction of being the birthplace of grunge music. Many bands went on to claim overnight success thanks to this type of music. The more famous ones were Alice in chains, Soundgarden, Pearl jam and Nirvana with their famous lead singer Kurt Cobain.
These bands may have been the more famous of the grunge genre but they were definitely not the first bands to discover the mix of Seventies rock and punk. The Seattle area was brimming with lots of other bands that had a great influence on the grunge music scene.
The three bands I am about to tell you about may be more familiar to rock fans but still had a great influence on the mainstream grunge scene.
The first band I would like to mention is Tad. Tad may not have seen a great amount of success in the mainstream with their music. But their heavy grinding sound that is more reminiscent of heavy metal music certainly gave them popularity with the many grunge fans.
Maybe it was the fact that their music was more heavy metal orientated but with grunge tones that led to them not having much wider success. Nonetheless the sound was awesome.
Another founder of the grunge movement was Malfunkshun. This is another band that did not have much success. They only released one album but it was a true combination of punk and metal that eventually started to become the unique sound of grunge.
Slightly different was the band Green River whose music was a combination of punk and heavy metal but infused with tones of blues to create a very distinctive sound. Green River was the first true grunge band in the respect that they were the first to actually release a grunge record. Green River actually got their name from a serial killer of the day.
These are just three of the many smaller bands that formed what we know now to be the grunge genre. They are well worth listening to if you want to experience what true grunge is all about.
